About the Job
Our client has a requirement for SQL Architect for a 2 day contract opportunity. The positions are located in Toronto.

Requirements or Qualifications
The customer has requested a SQL Server Health Check to identify issues with the server configuration, database and log file configuration, software updates and currency aspects of their SQL Servers. There are multiple versions of SQL Server running in the customer’s environment, including:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2012

As the customer does not have a full-time Database Administrator (“DBA”) to maintain and manage their production SQL Servers, there is a possibility that the servers may not be configured optimally with the latest SQL Server updates and patches recommended by Microsoft. Moreover, the configuration of the database and log files, performance-related settings, and overall health of the SQL Servers need to be reviewed by an assessment.

In order to complete the engagement within two (2) business days, the scope of the SQL Server Health Check will be limited to four (4) servers. The concepts and procedures implemented on these 4 servers will also apply to the other SQL Servers in the customer’s environment. The customer can extend the procedures to the remaining SQL Servers at their own convenience.

The outcomes of this engagement can be summarized as follows.
A report with the findings and recommendations of the SQL Server Health Check.
The estimated duration of the SQL Server Health Check is two(2) days, scheduled as follows:
  • Day 1: Remote work –Inspect SQL Server configuration including log files, databases and settings.
  • Day 2: Remote work - Inspect SQL Server configuration including log files, databases and settings.
Write a report documenting the findings and recommendations.

Project Scope

Current Infrastructure
The customer’s existing database infrastructure consists of multiple versions of SQL Server, including:
  • SQL Server 2005
  • SQL Server 2008
  • SQL Server 2008 R2
  • SQL Server 2012

Solution Objective
The objective of the SQL Server Health Check is to inspect the configuration of the SQL Servers in scope and provide a report outlining the findings and recommendations. The recommendations would include configuration changes and updates that include increasing the currency of the software update and patch levels, operating system optimization, error logs remediation, user database settings, system database settings, and maintenance plans.
The configuration parameters will be compared to the recommended best practices published by Microsoft, with recommendations on the likely sources of those configuration problems.
The desired result of the Microsoft SQL Server Health Check is a report outlining the findings and recommendations from a configuration standpoint, along with the recommended steps to remediate the issues.

The specific outcomes of this engagement are: a report with the findings and recommendations of the SQL Server Health Check

The SQL Server Health Check will consist of the following project tasks:

  • Review of the current configuration of the database files, storage configuration, physical file structure, and log files.
  • Analysis of the operating system settings as they relate to SQL Server configuration and operations.
  • Analysis of the error logs and the possible causes of any error conditions and ways to remediate issues.
  • Inspection of user database settings.
  • Inspection of system database settings.
  • Inspection of maintenance plans.

Project Deliverables
