Job Description:

Our client has a requirement for Cognos Designer / Developer for a 6 month contract opportunity. The positions are located in Toronto, Ontario.


Requirement or Qualifications:

The BI Cognos Designer plays a critical role in the success of an important Corporate Strategic Initiative, Business Intelligence. This role requires SME leadership in an environment of new tools and processes for our client. The focus for the BI Cognos Designer is on driving "Data To Knowledge" and enhancing the ability of business clients to access and effectively utilize data.

The BI Cognos Designer is responsible for Cognos applications designs that address business requirements, and ensuring the application is developed according to those designs. The BI Cognos Designer must be able to communicate and guide BI developers to ensure delivery of Cognos applications within specifications.

•Design ReportNet framework and PowerPlay models
•Well designed, optimized and sustainable BI applications
•Facilitate communications with business groups to understand BI maintenance and enhancement requests
•Assess and plan for the impacts of changes to the BI environment. Communicate impacts and plans with BI team, ETL team, DBA team, Business stakeholders and our Vendor partners
•Timely, well co-ordinated and fully communicated environment changes
•Plan and schedule release plans for maintenance and enhancement activities for Cognos Environment
•Gather, coordinate and communicate technical requirements for maintaining and supporting Cognos
•Development and administration teams that are aware of all requirements for maintaining a Cognos environment
•Lead the development and execution of detailed testing and acceptance procedures for data, framework packages, models and reports
•Properly tested reports, models and packages with validated data
•Support and coach Business developers and Adhoc Query writers
•Educated business power clients that are able to develop complex queries independently
•Manage the maintenance operations of Cognos and related systems
•Well maintained Cognos environment with minimal outages.
•Prepare estimates for projects and maintenance activities
•Accurate estimates.
•Coordinate ongoing BI Cognos activities (projects, enhancements, maintenance and problem fixes) with DBA, EDW and ETL support and development groups
•Activities between ETL and BI are well co-ordinated
•Research and evaluate new BI products and upgrades
•Expertise on current trends, tools and practices
•Implement and support Cognos usage tracking and reporting
•Scheduled reports on Cognos environment
•Adhere to Change Management Processes
•Expert on change management and follow defined CM processes
•Lead troubleshooting activities for Cognos Problems
•Proactive and efficient Cognos issues analysis
•Manage the relationship with Cognos Support – track and manage and report open and closed problems
•Effective relationship with Cognos, and Issues Track log
•Maintain BI processes, communicating changes to process and roles, as they need to occur
•Well maintained Cognos environment with all team members aware of changes.

Specific technical and professional knowledge and skills required:


Mandatory

•Recognized undergraduate degree/diploma in Business, Information Technology, Commerce
•8+ years work experience in Information Technology
•5+ years of Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence implementation
•3+ years hands-on Cognos development experience
•2+ years Cognos design experience
•Extensive experience in the IBM Cognos 8.x BI Tool Suite (ReportNet, PowerPlay, Impromptu, Framework Manager, Report Studio, Query Studio, Analysis Studio)
•Strong time management skills – ability to coordinate multiple tasks
•Experience in information technology change management processes
•Logical/Physical Database Design experience
•Excellent communication skills
•Ability to translate business need to technical requirement
•Attitude for continuous process improvement
•Strong Customer service orientation

•3 years work experience in large Information Technology environment
