Job Description:
Our client has a requirement for an Energy Management Engineer/Specialist for a perm opportunity.  The positions are located in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Requirement or Qualifications:
Working in a team environment, under the general direction of the Director of Engineering, the Energy Management Engineer/Specialist will focus on the analysis, design and operation of alternative and renewable energy systems in Arctic climates. The Energy Management Engineer/Specialist will act in a technical specialist consulting position, supporting engineering and operations departments. In addition, he or she will supply in-depth technical leadership and support to heat transfer sites, with a focus on customer support, troubleshooting, asset improvement/expansion, technology selection, research and standard development. The Energy Management Engineer/Specialist will be expected to travel to Arctic communities on a periodic basis, which may include travelling in small aircraft to project sites.


Duties and Responsibilities Include:
  • Managing time efficiently to withstand stress due to high volume of work and conflicting priorities
  • Responding to multiple demands and prioritizing responses
  • Acting as a stakeholder in the design of Mechanical systems for the various facilities that our client constructs and/or operates, from the perspective of optimizing energy efficiency and output from existing and new generating facilities
  • Identifying and evaluating potential energy conserving/cost synergies for alternative energy projects, including district heating, wind, solar, etc.
  • Facilitating the energy forecast, monthly tracking of generation, sales and losses, historical energy demand and develops analysis tools
  • Working with Communications staff to analyze and develop materials for public understanding of energy issues and options
  • Producing quarterly reports on generation/fuel consumption/generating efficiency, and developing benchmarks for efficiency and station service requirements
  • Providing technical assistance to operational and maintenance personnel in the implementation of recommended improvements to maximize energy efficient operation
  • Identifying easy reduction opportunities (no capital cost)
  • Providing, on a regular basis, written and verbal progress reports to the Director, Engineering on initiatives associated with energy projects/tasks
  • Preparing business cases for capital energy projects
  • Researching and ensuring that all available financial incentives and programs from various agencies are pursued to provide maximum benefit to our client and its customers
  • Coordinating activities with outside agencies and consulting firms engaged in researching and implementing energy-related projects
  • As needed, supervising work term, summer and/or part time students who may assist in gathering and analyzing energy data
  • Assisting in the development of designs, specifications and drawings for in-house projects
  • Drafting and evaluating RFPs, Tenders and specifications related to energy projects, and making written recommendations for award of work and/or procurement of equipment
  • Reviewing working drawings and specifications at various stages of completion for accuracy and conformance to governing codes, regulations, and specified scope of work and design
  • Reviewing project requirements with successful proponents and potentially supervising their work and providing direction as required Reviewing and analyzing design alternatives and making recommendations for preferred design alternatives Reviewing proposed projects to identify nature of project required, providing advice on the parameters for any preliminary studies, analyzing any studies commissioned within the department and assessing the feasibility of the project
  • Ensuring that all legitimate concerns are addressed, including implications for ongoing operations and maintenance of projects
  • Analyzing and preparing historical generation, fuel consumption, and cost data
  • Identifying special requirements to be incorporated into contract documents


Required Qualifications Include:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Transfer) or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) designation with 5 years of experience in energy efficiency evaluation and public knowledge transfers or an advanced degree in Energy Transfer
  • 5 to 7 years of Mechanical and/or Energy Transfer design, construction and project engineering/management experience
  • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills to find/validate facts to evaluate criteria, develop and select options, and determine methodologies in setting or modify standards
  • Professional and technical knowledge and experiences in order to provide guidance for the development and evaluation of designs and design standards
  • Excellent conceptual and communication skills
  • Capacity to recognize and use good judgment
  • Ability to prioritize activities to meet the scheduled work plan
  • Ability to handle difficult
