Job Description:
Our client has a requirement for a Senior Electrical Engineer – HVDC Specialist for a perm opportunity.  The position is located in the USA.

Role Overview
  • Plans and conducts independent work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
  • Devises new approaches to solving problems.
  • Broad working knowledge of precedents in the specialty area, the principles and practices of related technical areas and of coordinating work with other technical disciplines.
  • Plans and coordinates independent work requiring judgment and experience in the application and substantial adaptation of engineering techniques.
  • Devises new approaches to technical problems.
  • Knowledgeable of and performs standard discipline engineering activities on projects of relatively small size and complexity within the business line with minimal technical oversight.
  • Coordinates technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews.
  • Provides technical direction for specific tasks and assigns work to subordinate senior engineers, engineers, designers, drafters or project sub-groups.
  • Broad knowledge of precedents in the industry.
Our client seeks a qualified and experienced senior engineer to provide HVDC converter station expertise to a growing company business line. This position would entail providing Owners Engineering (OE) services for HVDC converter stations that are being designed, furnished and commissioned by a 3rd party (EPC-AE) contractor.

Overall duties would include:
  • Represent Owner as OE for HVDC converter stations designed, furnished and commissioned by 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor.
  • Duties would include review and validation of associated 3rd party EPC-AE and/or sub contractor AC/DC utility system studies, HVDC performance parameters, operational modes, proposed interconnections to AC systems, HVDC converter equipment type(s) and configuration(s) and other aspects of the HVDC interconnection.
  • Attend monthly Owner / EPC-AE Project technical review meetings in Owner offices and or 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor offices.
  • Perform supplier design reviews of HVDC converter equipment and attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) as required.
  • Provide OE oversight of supplier HVDC equipment fabrication and testing activities leading up to equipment shipment, including review of supplier design documents, performance data, testing data and other critical design and performance validation data.
  • Provide OE oversight of field erection, testing and commissioning activities by company and contractor construction staff, including necessary site presence as appropriate and resolution of field-originated issues.
The following specific skills will be evaluated as criteria for choosing an acceptable candidate:
  • Hands-on experience with the successful development, execution and commissioning of large HVDC converter station facilities, particularly from an overall EPC perspective.
Detailed and current knowledge of key aspects necessary to implement detailed specifications that would encompass overall scope, interfaces/battery limits, performance, testing and commissioning aspects of HVDC converter station facilities, including:
  • Valve applications and limitations
  • Valve hall arrangements for various operating modes
  • Valve hall building special requirements and design criteria
  • Bipole, monopole and emergency operating modes
  • Equipment configurations for various operating modes
  • Filter, reactor & converter transformer design criteria
  • Reliability and availability guarantees
  • Efficiency guarantees
  • Total harmonic distortion (THD) guarantees
  • Anode fields development
  • HVDC and AC interface controls, metering, relaying and   communications systems
  • Knowledge of general safety and special grounding and safety considerations applicable to HVDC converter stations.
  • Insight into special considerations applicable to stray current generation arising from HVDC converter station and transmission facilities and mitigation of their possible effects on existing underground facilities.
  • Insight into electrostatic and electromagnetic field levels and effects arising from HVDC converter station and transmission facilities and implementation of measures to mitigate possible effects on people, livestock and structures.
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage AC substations design, including layout, configuration, lightning protection, equipment specification and related control, metering, relaying and communications systems.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum ten years experience in the areas described above.
  • Professional engineering registration in a US state or Canadian province.
  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • International business travel required.
  • Right to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Active representation on relevant electric power industry, code or standard committee activities would be considered a plus.
  • Minimum fifteen years experience in the areas described above.
