Job Description:
Our client has a requirement for Strategic Mine Planner for a perm opportunity.  The position is located in Alaska.

Our client is currently seeking a Strategic Mine Planner to
  • execute the strategy for the mine planning team and to ensure service and / or operating standards are met.
  • contribute to the design and development of processes, practices and methodologies in the mine planning team. 
  • ensure continued growth of the team and to maximize operational efficiencies and profitability.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Duties

To work within the active mine planning team:

- Contributes to the development of processes, policies, systems and practices within the mine planning team that contributes to effective mine planning
- Analyzes and interprets information in reference to mine planning
- Researches information to support decision making and improve processes, technologies or methodologies
- Contributes to the development of policies and practices in the mine planning department
- Prepares communication materials, manuals and other written materials related to technical issues, program or systems
- Keeps on top of trends related to mine planning and incorporates this information into work assignments and approach
- Actively seeks and provides mentorship and learning to improve product or technical knowledge and skill set of self and team
- Collaborates with senior management to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions
- Designs initial, intermediate, and ultimate pits and pushbacks, based on ore reserve models and constraints
- Initiates designs for phasing and sequencing of new mines and revises plans for exiting mines
- Collaborates in the preparation of short-term mine plans and schedules, and integrates them with the long-term plans and designs
- Designs dumps, access roads, and ramps, and mine site facilities
- Collaborates in the planning of reserve definition and condemnation drill holes

To advise the management group on mine planning activities:

- Prepares business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and presents recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders
- Prepares financial spreadsheets, summarizes information and communicates results to key leaders
- Reviews best practices and the competitive landscape and recommends continuous improvement efforts in mining engineering
- Influences leaders and key stakeholders to buy into change efforts that will result in sustained competitive advantage
- Interface with senior management and other departments (operations, project managers, human resources, accounting and information systems) to ensure effective identification and communication of operations and project information that could impact the Company’s business results.

Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements

- Bachelor of Science in geology, mining engineering, a related field, or relevant work experience
- Two or more years of progressive experience in operational and project environment within the mining industry
- Level of proficiency with one of the mine planning software systems (MineSight, Maptech, Datamine, Surpac, Gemcom), and must exhibit an interest/aptitude for learning MineSight
- Level of proficiency with one of the mine scheduling software programs such as (MineSight-Strategic-Planner, Maptech-Chronos, Datamine-NPV-Scheduler, Gemcom-Whittle, Gemcom-MineSched)
- Level of proficiency in spreadsheets

Additional Qualifications & Skill Requirements

- Eligible for registration as a professional engineer
- A firm understanding of open pit procedures
- Experience with strategic planning and budgeting in the mining industry
- Demonstrated interest in professional development
- Working knowledge of a second language, preferably Spanish, Portuguese or Russian desirable but not mandatory
- Well-developed technical report writing and presentation skills
- Very strong communications skills. Team player with a strong inclination towards developing cooperative solutions
- Ability to perform financial analysis in a mining environment
- Ability to “cut to the chase”, quickly identifying key technical and business issues
- Must be self-directed and work well in a high performance environment
- Ability to travel (approximately 5%)-domestic as well as international
