Our client has a requirement for a Senior Electrical Engineer – HVDC Specialist for a perm opportunity.  The position is located in the USA.

Role Overview
  • Plans and conducts independent work within a global business unit requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.
  • Devises new approaches to solving problems.
  • Broad working knowledge of precedents in the specialty area, the principles and practices of related technical areas and of coordinating work with other technical disciplines.
  • Plans and coordinates independent work requiring judgment and experience in the application and substantial adaptation of engineering techniques.
  • Devises new approaches to technical problems.
  • Knowledgeable of and performs standard discipline engineering activities on projects of relatively small size and complexity within the business line with minimal technical oversight.
  • Coordinates technical issues with other departments on projects including constructability requirements and reviews.
  • Provides technical direction for specific tasks and assigns work to subordinate senior engineers, engineers, designers, drafters or project sub-groups.
  • Broad knowledge of precedents in the industry.

Our client seeks a qualified and experienced senior engineer to provide HVDC converter station expertise to a growing company business line. This position would entail providing Owners Engineering (OE) services for HVDC converter stations that are being designed, furnished and commissioned by a 3rd party (EPC-AE) contractor.

Overall duties would include:
  • Represent Owner as OE for HVDC converter stations designed, furnished and commissioned by 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor.
  • Duties would include review and validation of associated 3rd party EPC-AE and/or sub contractor AC/DC utility system studies, HVDC performance parameters, operational modes, proposed interconnections to AC systems, HVDC converter equipment type(s) and configuration(s) and other aspects of the HVDC interconnection.
  • Attend monthly Owner / EPC-AE Project technical review meetings in Owner offices and or 3rd party EPC-AE Contractor offices.
  • Perform supplier design reviews of HVDC converter equipment and attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) as required.
  • Provide OE oversight of supplier HVDC equipment fabrication and testing activities leading up to equipment shipment, including review of supplier design documents, performance data, testing data and other critical design and performance validation data.
  • Provide OE oversight of field erection, testing and commissioning activities by company and contractor construction staff, including necessary site presence as appropriate and resolution of field-originated issues.

The following specific skills will be evaluated as criteria for choosing an acceptable candidate:
  • Hands-on experience with the successful development, execution and commissioning of large HVDC converter station facilities, particularly from an overall EPC perspective.

Detailed and current knowledge of key aspects necessary to implement detailed specifications that would encompass overall scope, interfaces/battery limits, performance, testing and commissioning aspects of HVDC converter station facilities, including:
  • Valve applications and limitations
  • Valve hall arrangements for various operating modes
  • Valve hall building special requirements and design criteria
  • Bipole, monopole and emergency operating modes
  • Equipment configurations for various operating modes
  • Filter, reactor & converter transformer design criteria
  • Reliability and availability guarantees
  • Efficiency guarantees
  • Total harmonic distortion (THD) guarantees
  • Anode fields development
  • HVDC and AC interface controls, metering, relaying and   communications systems
  • Knowledge of general safety and special grounding and safety considerations applicable to HVDC converter stations.
  • Insight into special considerations applicable to stray current generation arising from HVDC converter station and transmission facilities and mitigation of their possible effects on existing underground facilities.
  • Insight into electrostatic and electromagnetic field levels and effects arising from HVDC converter station and transmission facilities and implementation of measures to mitigate possible effects on people, livestock and structures.
  • Working knowledge of high-voltage AC substations design, including layout, configuration, lightning protection, equipment specification and related control, metering, relaying and communications systems.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum ten years experience in the areas described above.
  • Professional engineering registration in a US state or Canadian province.
  • Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • International business travel required.
  • Right to work and remain in the US without visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
  • Active representation on relevant electric power industry, code or standard committee activities would be considered a plus.
  • Minimum fifteen years experience in the areas described above.

Field Coordinator – Electrical
Construction Engineer III
Our client has a requirement for a Electrical Field Coordinator - Transmission Line for a perm opportunity.  The positions are located in Alberta.

  • Review contractor’s technical submittals.

  • Monitor environmental and Right of Way (ROW) requirements and restrictions and coordinate with environmental specialist and property landowners to resolve problems or restraints. 
  • Field management of substation construction, installation of tower foundations, towers, and transmission lines.  Review of rigging and lifts plans and heavy haul plans for compliance to approved requirements. 
  • Track installed quantities and contractor man hours for verification of contractor invoices. 
  • Maintain project safety awareness and enforce company safety policy and Zero accident Philosophy.
  • Coordinate with customer and facility rep for outage and lockout-tagout to support tie-in and modification of existing substation facilities. 
  • Coordinate with third parties for review of materials, approval and compliance with their standards.
  • Facilitate coordination of contractors work with third parties and public agencies.
  • Review and respond to contractors technical queries and coordinate with Engineering Department on technical issues.
  • Supervise quantity take- offs.
  • Review contractor’s monthly invoices.
  • Review materials and equipment to assure proper storage and maintenance in accordance with manufacturers requirements prior to turnover acceptance.
  • Verify as-builts have been completed and represent final installation configuration.
  • Prepare daily reports on each contractor.
  • Provide technical support to the preparation of Field Change Requests and Change Orders.
  • Participate in construction progress meetings.
  • Participate in final in house inspection, turnover package development and punch lists identification, tracking, and closure.
  • Review engineering design packages for constructability issues and lessons learned.

Basic Requirements:
  • All applicants must have the right to work in Canada and be able to obtain Canadian work visa as required (occasional travel may be required)
  • All applicants must have a current and valid drivers’ license.
  • Bachelors Degree in Construction Management or an Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in lieu of degree. Equivalent experience is considered a minimum of 6 years direct related experience.
  • Minimum 2-5 years practical work experience in a construction environment in a technical support position furnishing Para-technical assistance to construction management and/or line supervisors required.
  • General knowledge of industry codes to include NEC, NESC and OSHA.
  • Good communication skills both written and oral are essential.
  • Basic to advanced computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1 or more years experience in High Voltage transmission, distribution, or substation work.
  • Experience in electrical power installation for site development, commercial, industrial or utility facilities.

Position Duties/Responsibilities:
The Construction Site Manager for the Electric Project reports to the Project Construction Manager on project and functionally to the Construction Manager and is the senior representative in the Field Office.  Supervises and manages the construction field organization and supporting functions in the execution of project scope for long runs (100 miles plus) of power line transmission and associated infrastructure, construction of new substations and modification of existing substations.  Duties include the following activities:
  • Coordinate with client representative for outages, lockout-tagout and utility access for existing plant systems and facilities.
  • Review environmental impacts, restrictions and requirements associated with permits and Right of Way access documents.
  • Identify conditions that represent a change in scope, cost, or terms and conditions with regard to prime contract.
  • Coordinate with state and local environmental specialist to resolve potential environmental impacts and implements required mitigation plans.
  • Develop project estimates, execution plans, schedules, and work plans.
  • Interface with contracts manager for subcontractor bid evaluation, scope of work development and subcontracting strategy.
  • Implements project procedures and controls, quality plans; safety plans, and is a single point of contact for project management.
  • Monitor cost, schedule, safety, and quality performance of direct hire and subcontractors.
  • Provides input to weekly project reports for cost and schedule performance with analysis and corrective actions to maintain cost performance index (CPI) and schedule performance index (SPI) within established targets.
  • Implements the project labor relations program and coordinates with union and non-union labor representatives to enforce the project work rules and Project Labor Agreements.
  • Direct the overall project safety, health and environmental control programs to ensure strict adherence to appropriate federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Monitors project site safety performance to ensure personnel are committed to client’s Zero Accident program.
  • Provide salary planning, force ranking, AR information to the Project Construction Manager as required.


Basic Requirements:
  • All applicants must have the right to work in Canada and be able to obtain Canadian work visa as required.
  • All applicants must have a current and valid drivers’ license.
  • Bachelors Degree in Construction Management or an Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in lieu of degree. Equivalent experience is considered a minimum of 8 years direct related experience.
  • Previous field office work experience providing exposure and in a construction management position furnishing cost schedule and construction execution assistance to senior management.
  • Minimum 15 years practical work experience in managing construction projects in a role of Foreman/General Foreman, Superintendent, Site Manager, Construction Manager, PFE, or similar role.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in a supervisory or management position
  • Good communication skills both written and oral are essential.
  • Basic to advanced computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Contract license holder (current or expired).
  • 5 or more years experience in High Voltage transmission, distribution, and substation work.
  • Experience in electrical power installation for site development, commercial, industrial or utility facilities.
  • Craft Superintendent experience with union and non-union labor.

4. Field management of substation construction, installation of tower foundations, towers, and transmission lines.  Review of rigging and lifts plans and heavy haul plans for compliance to approved requirements. 
5. Track installed quantities and contractor man hours for verification of contractor invoices. 
6. Maintain project safety awareness and enforce company safety policy and Zero accident Philosophy.
7. Coordinate with customer and facility rep for outage and lockout-tagout to support tie-in and modification of existing substation facilities. 
8. Coordinate with third parties for review of materials, approval and compliance with their standards.
9. Facilitate coordination of contractors work with third parties and public agencies.
10. Review and respond to contractors technical queries and coordinate with Engineering Department on technical issues.
11. Supervise quantity take- offs.
12. Review contractor’s monthly invoices.
13. Review materials and equipment to assure proper storage and maintenance in accordance with manufacturers requirements prior to turnover acceptance.
14. Verify as-builts have been completed and represent final installation configuration.
15. Prepare daily reports on each contractor.
16. Provide technical support to the preparation of Field Change Requests and Change Orders.
17. Participate in construction progress meetings.
18. Participate in final in house inspection, turnover package development and punch lists identification, tracking, and closure.
19. Review engineering design packages for constructability issues and lessons learned.


Basic Requirements:
  • All applicants must have the right to work in Canada and be able to obtain Canadian work visa as required.
  • All applicants must have a current and valid driver’s license.
  • Bachelors Degree in Construction Management or an Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in lieu of degree. Equivalent experience is considered a minimum of 6 years direct related experience.
  • Minimum 2-5 years practical work experience in a construction environment in a technical support position furnishing Para-technical assistance to construction management and/or line supervisors required.
  • General knowledge of industry codes to include NEC, NESC and OSHA.
  • Good communication skills both written and oral are essential.
  • Basic to advanced computer skills and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs.


Preferred Qualifications:
·         1 or more years experience in High Voltage transmission, distribution, or substation work.
  • Experience in electrical power installation for site development, commercial, industrial or utility facilities

Position Duties/Responsibilities:
The Field Coordinator for the Electric Project reports to the Lead Field Coordinator or Field Construction Manager on project and functionally to the Chief Construction Engineer or Construction Manager.  Responsible for coordination and oversight of field executed work to assure all work is performed to safety and quality requirements.  Duties include the following activities:

1. Review contractor’s technical submittals.
2. Monitor contractor Quality Control Program and environmental compliance program, this includes site inspection for compliance with Contract Documents, permit and environmental requirements, approved submittals in conformance to codes and contract requirements.
3. Monitor environmental and Right of Way (ROW) requirements and restrictions and coordinate with environmental specialist and property landowners to resolve problems or restraints.
